The Read

#7 Chunk of Gold is the most likely winner. #3 Tiztastic is the preferred wager at the right price. #4 Banishing is the horse whose current ability is hardest to measure cleanly.

Chunk of Gold enters with the strongest recent Beyer, proven nine-furlong form, and enough tactical speed to control how this race develops. Tiztastic comes from the opposite end of the pace spectrum. His strongest races have been produced with sustained energy, and both Beyer and Equibase show him progressing into this assignment rather than merely returning to a previous level.

Banishing complicates the race because the figure systems disagree sharply about his latest effort. Beyer assigned his Charles Town Classic second a 96. Equibase gave the same performance a 113. That is too large a gap to dismiss. It does not automatically make Banishing value, but it makes a Beyer-only downgrade too aggressive.

This Is Uscar is improving and should get an economical trip. Dragoon Guard has more underlying form than his latest Beyer suggests, but still needs the race to move forward materially.

Chunk of Gold gets first control. From the outside, Jaime Torres can see what Banishing and Dragoon Guard intend before deciding whether to clear or settle just off them. That matters because trainer Ethan West has indicated that Chunk of Gold does not require the lead as much as he requires rhythm.

Banishing is the tactical hinge. If Francisco Arrieta attacks early, he increases the probability that Tiztastic gets the race he wants. If he stalks and waits, he gives Banishing his own best chance but may also allow Chunk of Gold to conserve too much.

This Is Uscar should get the cheapest trip. Edgar Morales can save ground behind the speed and try to move before Tiztastic reaches full momentum.

Tiztastic will likely be last, but in a five-horse field that is not inherently damaging. His task is timing, not traffic. He cannot allow Chunk of Gold to reach the quarter pole still traveling comfortably.

Figure Consensus

The Beyer and Equibase scales should not be blended numerically. The useful information is whether they agree on a horse's direction and current standing.

A heavy line marks a horse the two systems read differently.
The field ordered by each system on its own scale. The two numbers are never added or averaged. What matters is where the orderings disagree.

Chunk of Gold's 105 does not stand alone. Equibase rated his Iselin 108, his Clark 108, and his Keeneland allowance win 110. There is enough supporting form to treat the Iselin as a legitimate high-level performance, even if repeating a career-top Beyer is never automatic.

Tiztastic has the cleanest progression in the field. His last three dirt-route Equibase figures are 103, 105, 109, corresponding with a Beyer climb from 93 to 99 to 103. Two independent systems are pointing in the same direction.

Banishing is the horse where interpretation matters most. Equibase viewed the Charles Town Classic as a return to something close to his established stakes level, while Beyer did not. His older Equibase ratings include a 117 and several 114-level performances. The question is not whether Banishing once possessed enough ability. He clearly did. The question is which system is describing his current condition more accurately.

Dragoon Guard presents a smaller version of the same problem. His latest Beyer is poor, but Equibase assigned a 103, and his broader Equibase record contains several 105-plus performances. That keeps him from being an automatic toss, although it does not make a short price attractive.

The Contenders

7Chunk of Gold

Chunk of Gold owns the strongest recent Beyer and the most control over the race.

His 105 in the Philip Iselin was more persuasive than a loose-lead performance would have been. He set the pace, was passed by Bishop's Bay in upper stretch, then fought back and missed by only a head. That response after being headed is meaningful.

He is also thoroughly proven at nine furlongs: two wins, two seconds, and a third from five attempts. Earlier efforts include a 103 Beyer winning at Keeneland and a 100 in the Clark at Churchill.

The direct Churchill loss to This Is Uscar deserves context. Chunk of Gold was returning from a seven-month layoff, fought restraint through slow fractions, and wasted energy. The updated DRF shows that race was conducted with a 50-foot run-up, so the comparison itself is clean from a timing-configuration standpoint.

His risk is straightforward. The Iselin was a career-top Beyer. If he returns to the 100-102 range while Banishing makes him work through the middle of the race, the gap closes quickly.

3Tiztastic

Tiztastic has the best current trajectory.

His Whitney fifth produced a 103 Beyer and a 109 Equibase figure. Before that he earned a 99 Beyer in the Suburban and won at nine furlongs over Churchill.

The Whitney is particularly interesting. Tiztastic advanced from the rear before his run flattened. Steve Asmussen has said the horse had significant momentum before going to the inside, where that momentum stopped.

Trainer explanations should be treated carefully. In this case, the explanation fits both the race progression and the career-best figure, so it deserves some weight.

His 115 Late Pace rating is the best in the field. The five-horse setup also removes much of the traffic risk normally associated with his style.

He does not need a total collapse. He needs enough pressure in front of him that the race becomes about sustained energy rather than position.

Position
Best blend of current development and late-race fit
Action price
7/2 or better

4Banishing

Banishing is the race's most interesting uncertainty.

A straightforward Beyer reading says his current U.S. route form sits below the level required. His latest 96 is well short of Chunk of Gold's 105 and Tiztastic's 103.

Equibase sees him differently. His Charles Town Classic received a 113, and his 2025 ratings regularly reached the 111-117 range.

That leaves two plausible interpretations.

The first is that the Beyer is correct and Banishing has not regained his peak route form.

The second is that his latest race was already much closer to his best than the Beyer suggests, making him dangerous at any price that assumes deterioration.

His trip should be excellent. He can remain close to Chunk of Gold without needing to contest every stride, then attack before Tiztastic reaches him.

The nine-furlong record keeps the enthusiasm measured. He has one win from eight starts at the distance and was third in this race last year.

1This Is Uscar

This Is Uscar has earned his way into the conversation through improvement.

He enters off a career-best 102 Beyer. One race earlier he beat Chunk of Gold by 3 3/4 lengths at Churchill, and his overall Churchill record is 7-2-2-1.

The latest Equibase figure is also 102, so the two systems broadly agree on where he stands today. His lifetime Equibase history includes higher numbers, including a 109 last fall, which suggests that another forward move is not impossible.

His projected trip is favorable. From the rail, Morales should be able to sit behind Chunk of Gold and Banishing while saving ground.

The unresolved issue is nine furlongs. He has never raced this far, and his pace profile is more tactical than sustained.

If the distance holds, he can win. If it does not, the weakness should appear in the final furlong.

Position
Price horse with a legitimate trip
Action price
9/1 or better

2Dragoon Guard

Dragoon Guard is better than the 85 Beyer from his latest race makes him appear.

Equibase rated that Charles Town Classic a 103, and his historical profile includes a 107 in the Pennsylvania Derby and several 105-level efforts.

His recent :59.3 five-furlong Churchill work was also sharp.

The problem is comparative rather than absolute. Even after giving him credit for the stronger Equibase interpretation, he still needs to beat three horses with better current evidence and another horse, This Is Uscar, whose form is moving in the right direction.

Brad Cox and Tyler Gaffalione will attract attention, but current-meet numbers are not strong enough, or based on samples large enough, to justify overriding the horses themselves.

Better than the latest Beyer, still price sensitive

Wagering Strategy

Straight bets

Primary

#3 Tiztastic at 7/2 or better

This is the strongest combination of current form, class, race shape, and required price.

Secondary

#4 Banishing at 4/1 or better

The figure disagreement creates enough uncertainty that the price must compensate for it.

Smaller price position

#1 This Is Uscar at 9/1 or better

The trip is attractive. The distance remains the reason to keep the stake below the top two wagers.

Favorite

#7 Chunk of Gold at 3/1 or better

He is the most likely winner, but there is no need to accept a price below our required margin simply because he ranks first.

Pass at short odds

#2 Dragoon Guard

He becomes interesting only if the market reaches approximately 15/1.

Quarter-Kelly staking is appropriate only after actual tote odds are available and the edge can be quantified.

This is not an attractive race to single unless the rest of the sequence forces that decision.

If the public heavily singles Chunk of Gold, Tiztastic and Banishing become especially valuable horizontally because either winning removes a disproportionate share of competing tickets.

Dissenting view

Adversarial Read

The strongest argument against the preferred wagering approach is that Chunk of Gold may simply be the best horse in the best position.

He owns the strongest recent Beyer, has already shown high-level nine-furlong form, and controls the first tactical decision. If his Iselin 105 is repeatable and Banishing elects to stalk rather than apply sustained pressure, Tiztastic may never receive enough help.

The favorable case for Tiztastic assumes the Whitney contained at least some hidden merit and that the race develops honestly enough for his late profile to matter.

The favorable case for Banishing assumes the Equibase interpretation of his latest race captures something the Beyer misses.

That last point deserves particular discipline. Disagreement between figure systems does not create value by itself. It creates uncertainty. Price determines whether that uncertainty is worth buying.

The Card

Chunk of Gold has the highest win probability. Tiztastic offers the cleanest combination of current development and potential price. Banishing is the horse whose market treatment will tell us the most.

If the tote falls below the stated thresholds, reduce exposure or pass.

This is a line, not a tip. A 30 percent favourite loses about seven times out of ten. Probabilities describe how often something happens over a run of races, which is the level at which this work should be judged.

Two figure systems, never blended. Beyer Speed Figures and Equibase Speed Figures run on different scales, so the numbers are never added, averaged or differenced into a single rating. They are compared only for whether they agree on a horse's direction and standing, which is why the chart above ranks the field twice rather than once.

Sources. Speed figures are Beyer Speed Figures as published by Daily Racing Form and Equibase Speed Figures as published by Equibase. Early and late pace ratings are TimeformUS. Past performances, running lines, margins and workout times are from the published record. Field, post positions, riders and trainers are as published by Churchill Downs. Every figure on this page is reproduced as published and none is estimated.

What this line does not contain. Track condition was not available when the analysis was written, and every wagering threshold on this page is stated against a tote that did not yet exist. A sealed or tiring Churchill surface changes the pace calculus materially. The two race-day checks at the top of this page link to the sources for both.

Field size. Seven horses were entered. Five start. Original Sin and McAfee were also entered at Santa Anita on the same date. The line, the pace map and the wagering structure on this page are all built on the five-horse field.
