Before They Were Breeders’ Cup Horses The Juveniles
We traced the public auction history of every horse drawn for Friday’s five Breeders’ Cup juvenile races: what each one sold for, who bought it, and which were bought back, withdrawn or never sold at auction.
I read the Breeders’ Cup past performances in the wrong order. Before I look at a speed figure or a workout, I look for the little sale notation beside the horse’s name. It tells you where the horse last went through a public auction and what someone paid for it.
For a two-year-old, that transaction is usually recent. Sometimes it happened only a few months before the horse made its first start, and it provides a record of what someone thought the horse was worth before there was much racing evidence to work with.
The trouble is that the notation usually shows only the most recent transaction. Anyone who has bought or sold real estate knows how much more you can learn from the price history. When was the property first offered? What did someone pay for it? Did it sell again a year later, and for how much?
Thoroughbreds have price histories too, and they can be considerably more revealing. A horse might pass through the ring as a weanling, return as a yearling, get bought back, and then show up at a two-year-old sale where buyers have the benefit of seeing it breeze.
Consider Miss Monica, one of the twelve fillies entered in Friday’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. She first appeared at Keeneland November in 2024, where she was bought back for $32,000 as a weanling. Ten months later, Jesse Hoppel bought her for $45,000 in Book 5B, the final book of Keeneland September, and brought her to OBS April this spring, where she sold for $850,000 to Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, three Arizona entrepreneurs who own a number of horses together.
Since then, she has made two starts and won both, including the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante by 6¼ lengths. On Friday, she returns to Keeneland, where she sold for $45,000 thirteen months earlier. Her journey made me curious about the other horses coming to Lexington for the Breeders’ Cup and what their auction histories might tell us.
We traced all 60 juveniles drawn for Friday’s five championship races through the public auction records we could identify. We examined foal and weanling sales, yearling auctions in America and Europe, two-year-old breeze-up sales, and horses that were withdrawn or failed to meet their reserves. The exercise took us through sale records from Lexington, Saratoga, Newmarket, Doncaster, Deauville and several other major auction centers.
Forty-four of the 60 have sold at public auction at least once, while another four were cataloged or offered but never completed a sale. Twelve have no identifiable public auction history, and eleven of those twelve are entered in turf races, seven for trainers based in Europe.
Twenty-six were cataloged at Keeneland September last year, meaning more than four in ten of Friday’s runners appeared in the same Keeneland catalog just thirteen months ago. Fourteen horses were purchased at one auction and resold at another, eleven of them as two-year-olds.

Every horse’s sale history, race by race, is at the end of this post.
Every horse in the Juvenile, run on dirt, has sold at public auction, and all eight appeared in last year’s Keeneland September catalog. Six were placed in the first two books.
In the Juvenile Turf, only seven of fourteen have sold at auction, and six have no identifiable public sale history. Those include Folsom Blues and Avec Toi, both bred by the people who race them. These are selected championship fields drawn from very different racing populations, but the contrast offers a look at how the American dirt market and the international turf market produce their best young horses.
The Juvenile Looks Like Keeneland September
The eight colts in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile provide a direct look at what happened to some of the horses American buyers valued most highly last September. Every runner was cataloged at Keeneland, and five sold there before the other three found buyers at Fasig-Tipton October.
Damavand was the most expensive of Friday’s 60 at Keeneland, bringing $1 million in Book 2 from Amo Racing. American History cost $825,000 in Book 1, while Hughes brought $675,000 in Book 2. Hughes has since won all four of his starts, including the Del Mar Futurity and American Pharoah, both Grade 1 races, while American History is two for two after winning the Breeders’ Futurity over this track on October 3.
The rest of the field shows how horses can reach the same race by different routes. He Is No Lie cost $70,000 in Book 4, then brought $150,000 at OBS March after breezing an eighth in :9 4/5. Earth Song went from $150,000 in Book 2 to $250,000 at the same OBS sale.
Three others left Keeneland September without completing a sale. Coach Pope and Gaudreau were withdrawn, while Salahudin went through the ring in Book 2 and was bought back for $190,000. All three sold at Fasig-Tipton October a few weeks later, with Kenneth McPeek paying $350,000 for Coach Pope, Bradley Thoroughbreds buying Gaudreau for $220,000, and Donato Lanni signing for Salahudin at $325,000 for Zedan Racing.
Since then, Salahudin has won all three starts, including the Iroquois. Gaudreau ran second in the Champagne, while Coach Pope finished second to American History in the Breeders’ Futurity.
The five Juvenile starters that sold at Keeneland brought a median of $675,000. Across all five races, the 17 Friday starters that sold at Keeneland September brought a median of $200,000, compared with $80,000 for the entire sale.
That is a substantial premium, although the comparison comes with an obvious qualification. We are looking at horses that have already earned places in a championship race, and many expensive Keeneland yearlings have yet to accomplish anything comparable.

The 17 that sold there brought a $200,000 median, against $80,000 for the whole sale.

The buyers of these particular colts had good reasons to like them last September, and several have already rewarded that confidence. We can see the prices and the subsequent racing results, while the original physical evaluations and purchasing decisions remain with the people who made them.
The Juvenile Fillies Came From Every Part of the Market
The Juvenile Fillies offers a much wider range of commercial outcomes. At one end is Life Changing, a $1,025,000 Saratoga purchase for Repole Stable. Todd Pletcher also trains Badittude, another Repole purchase, who brought $425,000 in Book 1 at Keeneland. At the other end is Lexi’s Charm, purchased for $15,000 in Book 5A by Bill and Liz Poston Racing and Brad Smith.
Lexi’s Charm has won two of her three starts for Mark Casse, including an allowance race at Keeneland earlier this month. Miss Monica came from Book 5B, one book later, before making her jump from a $45,000 yearling purchase to an $850,000 two-year-old sale.
Miss Monica and He Is No Lie, in the Juvenile, both come from Early Voting’s first crop, and both were bought in Keeneland’s later books and resold at OBS this spring. That crop reached the races this year, Early Voting’s fee for 2027 was set at $50,000, and he died of colic on October 20, at seven.
Two other fillies offer a different perspective on what an auction result can tell us. Neither has ever completed a public auction sale, and on September 12 they finished first and second in the Pocahontas at Churchill Downs.
Manuka Honey, an Upstart filly, was bought back for $19,000 at Fasig-Tipton October last year. She has won all three of her starts, including the Pocahontas, and races for a partnership that includes her breeder, Terry Hamilton.
Scarlett Begonia, a daughter of Life Is Good, was bought back for $285,000 in Book 3 at Keeneland September. She returned at OBS March, breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 and was bought back again, this time for $220,000. She races for a partnership that includes her breeders and finished second to Manuka Honey in the Pocahontas.
Both fillies earned places in a $2 million championship race after failing to meet their reserves at public auction. The published RNA figures may include seller-side bidding, and we have no way of knowing what the buyers thought of their physicals, veterinary findings or future prospects at the time.
It’s tempting to look at Manuka Honey’s $19,000 RNA and conclude that the market missed an obvious bargain. We have the considerable advantage of knowing what she accomplished afterward, which is why these histories are worth studying.
The Juvenile Turf Sprint Has the Most Pinhooks
The Juvenile Turf Sprint has more pinhooking activity than any other race on Friday’s card. Seven of its twelve runners were purchased at one auction and sold at another, and six of those horses went through two-year-old sales.
That fits the commercial profile of the race. The Juvenile Turf Sprint is run over five and a half furlongs, and the breeze-up market gives buyers an opportunity to evaluate speed over a short distance before committing their money.
Mussab provides one of the best examples. He sold for just 5,000 guineas (about $7,000) in Book 3 at Tattersalls October last year, making him the cheapest identifiable yearling purchase among Friday’s runners. Six months later he returned to Newmarket for the Guineas Breeze-Up and brought 52,000 guineas (about $73,000), more than ten times his yearling price, and he has since won three races, including the Cornwallis on October 9.
Libertango took a more expensive route. Hubert Guy bought her for €130,000 (about $151,000) at Arqana August for Blue Farm Bloodstock, with George Boughey, who now trains her, among the bidders. At the Craven Breeze-Up she brought 400,000 guineas (about $565,000) to Rob Speers and Old Mill Stud, acting for Vefa Ibrahim Araci, and she has since won the Albany at Royal Ascot and the Lowther at York before finishing second to Sun Goddess in the Cheveley Park.
Brickyard Belle has an even more complicated transaction history. Evergreen Bloodstock paid $160,000 for her as a weanling at Keeneland November, and she went through the ring in Book 1 at Keeneland September without selling. Tami Bobo bought her afterward for $200,000 in a recorded post-sale.
At OBS April she breezed an eighth in :9 4/5. Once again she failed to sell through the ring, and once again a transaction was completed afterward, this time for $600,000 to Case Clay Thoroughbred Management. That makes three completed public-auction transactions, two of them arranged after the horse had already left the sales ring, and she has since won both of her starts, including the Matron.
The three valuations were made at different stages of the horse’s development, with buyers having access to different information each time. The weanling buyer could evaluate her pedigree and physical, the yearling buyers could see how she had developed, and the OBS buyers had the benefit of a recorded breeze.
That is one reason the last sale price in a horse’s past performances can tell only part of the story. The final price may reflect improved physical development, additional evidence of athletic ability or changing expectations about the horse’s future.

A Different Commercial World on the Turf
The Juvenile Turf reflects another side of the bloodstock business. Only seven of its fourteen runners have sold at public auction, and six have no identified sale history, including several horses racing for major European operations.

Coolmore’s partners have five runners in the race, although only two were purchased at public auction. Haffner, a Kentucky-bred son of Justify, cost $375,000 in Book 1 at Keeneland September and went to Ireland, where Aidan O’Brien trains him. He won the Royal Lodge at Newmarket last month.
Florida Bay sold as a foal for €270,000 (about $287,000) at Goffs November before bringing 375,000 guineas (about $526,000) at Tattersalls October. He has since won the Tyros at Leopardstown.
The other three Coolmore runners have no identified public auction histories. Avec Toi was bred in Kentucky by Coolmore’s partners and has won four of his five starts in France for Christopher Head. Man’s Best Friend, winner of the Richmond at Goodwood, was bred by Newstead Breeding, while Great Barrier Reef, winner of the Coventry at Royal Ascot and later third in the Dewhurst, was bred by David and Diane Nagle’s Barronstown Stud. Both breeders sell yearlings at public auction, but neither colt has a public sale record, so both reached the Coolmore partners away from the ring.
Other confirmed homebreds include Folsom Blues, bred by Al Shira’aa Racing and winner of the National Stakes at the Curragh, and Agate, bred and raced by Dede McGehee, who won the Bourbon at Keeneland on October 4. Juddmonte’s Amusingly, who beat colts in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp, is another example in the Juvenile Fillies Turf. These horses illustrate how major breeding and racing operations can develop their own runners alongside those purchased at auction.
Two fillies in the turf races took long international routes to Friday. Curracloe, a daughter of Baaeed, was bred in Kentucky by Frederica Stable and Kindred Stables before selling for 240,000 guineas (about $337,000) in Book 2 at Tattersalls October. She went to Ireland to race for Sheikh Fahad Al Thani’s Qatar Racing and trainer Johnny Murtagh, has won both of her starts, including the Darley Fillies’ Stakes at the Curragh, and returns to Kentucky for the Juvenile Fillies Turf.
Primetime Emmy followed an even more unusual path. She was bred in Australia on Northern Hemisphere time by Matthew Sandblom of Kingstar Farm, sent to France to race for Francis-Henri Graffard, and has since won the Prix Eclipse.
The breeding decisions and ownership arrangements behind these horses vary widely, as do the auction markets in which some of them changed hands. By Friday afternoon, all have earned the opportunity to compete at the same championship meeting.
The Buyers Were Following Different Paths, Too
Amo Racing shows how international the buying market has become. Five of its horses are entered across three of Friday’s races, and all five were purchased at public auction in three different countries.
Damavand came from Keeneland September for $1 million and Earth Song from OBS March for $250,000. Crownbreaker and Pikachu were purchased in Book 1 at Tattersalls for 550,000 and 450,000 guineas (about $771,000 and $631,000), respectively, while Force Noir came from Goffs Orby for €130,000 (about $153,000).
The collection spans American and European markets, different racing surfaces and a wide range of prices. Some horses were bought at the yearling sales and another was acquired after buyers could watch it breeze.
Coolmore’s five Juvenile Turf runners came through a different combination of routes, including two auction purchases, a confirmed owner-bred horse and two more with no identified public sale histories. The two operations are both well represented on Friday’s card, and they got there through different mixes of bloodstock purchases and breeding programs.
Some of These Horses Are Going Back to Auction Before They Race
On Wednesday evening, October 28, Keeneland will conduct its Championship Sale at historic Castleton, just two days before the juveniles compete, and four of Friday’s 60 are cataloged. Hell of A Spin, a son of Naval Crown, is offered as a whole horse after previously selling for €65,000 (about $76,000) as a yearling and €75,000 (about $88,000) at the Tattersalls Ireland Breeze-Up. Ballinea Star, winner of the Anglesey at the Curragh, is also offered in full after selling for €26,000 (about $31,000) at Goffs Orby.
Fractional interests in two other fillies will be offered. A 25% interest in Primetime Emmy is cataloged, as is a 50% interest in Citrus Springs, whose own auction history includes three appearances in less than a year.
Citrus Springs was bought back at Keeneland September for $75,000, sold at Fasig-Tipton October for $65,000, then brought $300,000 at OBS March after breezing an eighth in :10. She broke her maiden in Ireland, returned to Kentucky to win the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Fillies, and is now entered in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.
The fractional interests are different transactions from purchasing an entire horse, so their prices cannot be compared directly with the earlier auction results. They do provide another opportunity for the market to express a valuation, this time with stakes performance available to prospective buyers.
All four are entered on Friday, so Wednesday’s buyers will be bidding on horses, or shares of horses, two days before they run in the Breeders’ Cup. The same Wednesday auction will conclude with the offering of Castleton itself, the historic 951-acre farm hosting the event.
What These Price Histories Tell Us
I came into this expecting yearling prices to explain more of the story than they ultimately did.
In the Juvenile, the connection is fairly strong. All eight came through Keeneland September, several were expensive purchases in the first two books, and the group has already produced some excellent dirt horses.
The turf and filly races show a much wider range of paths to the same level of competition. Miss Monica went from a $45,000 Book 5B yearling to an $850,000 two-year-old and a Grade 1 winner. Mussab moved from a 5,000-guinea yearling (about $7,000) to a 52,000-guinea breeze-up purchase (about $73,000) and a Group 3 winner, while Manuka Honey and Scarlett Begonia never completed a public sale before finishing first and second in the Pocahontas.
At the other end are seven-figure yearlings and homebreds whose owners chose to retain them for racing. Their earlier prices, or the decision to keep them, were judgments made with different amounts of information, often well before the horses had demonstrated much of their ability.
There’s an important limitation to the resale figures. Every horse in this study has already reached a Breeders’ Cup championship field, so we are examining an exceptionally successful group. Many unsuccessful pinhooks, disappointing yearlings and expensive horses that never developed are absent, making these histories unsuitable for measuring the overall profitability of pinhooking.
These histories show the market changing its valuation as evidence accumulates. A foal is evaluated on pedigree, physical and expectations for development. The yearling market adds another stage of physical assessment and a new group of buyers, the breeze-up sales provide evidence of speed, and the racetrack eventually supplies the most consequential information.
Some horses make enormous jumps in value along the way, while others remain with breeders who have the confidence and resources to race them themselves. By the time we see them in a Breeders’ Cup field, their sale histories represent a series of decisions made by people who could only work with the information available at the time.
We’ve followed those histories as far as the public records allow. The decisions behind the transactions, including why someone bought, kept, resold or brought a horse home, often remain with the people who made them. If you bred, bought, sold or pinhooked one of these 60 horses and have another part of the story to share, I’d like to hear it.

Methodology. The study covers the 60 horses drawn on October 26, 2026 for the five Breeders’ Cup juvenile championship races at Keeneland on October 30, excluding also-eligibles. The population reflects the draw and may change through scratches or substitutions.
Auction histories were reconstructed using published results from Keeneland, Fasig-Tipton, OBS, Tattersalls, Tattersalls Ireland, Goffs, Goffs UK and Arqana, with additional information from Thoroughbred Intelligence’s sale files and identified third-party reporting. Horses were matched on sire, dam and foaling information. Keeneland’s November 2024 results do not separately identify post-sales and ring sales.
Completed ring transactions and recorded post-sales count as sales. RNAs and withdrawals are identified separately. For the 12 horses with no record, we searched Keeneland, Fasig-Tipton, OBS, Tattersalls, Tattersalls Ireland, Goffs, Goffs UK and Arqana results, and Inglis for the Australian-bred Primetime Emmy. An absence of an identifiable public auction record does not prove a horse was never offered, and private transactions may be missing.
Sale prices remain in their original currencies, with guineas left in guineas. Dollar figures in parentheses are estimates, converted at the month’s average of the Federal Reserve’s daily exchange rates and rounded to the nearest $1,000, with a guinea counted as £1.05. Gross resale multiples exclude carrying costs, preparation, commissions and financing. Keeneland book assignments follow the published 2025 catalog, including Books 5A and 5B. The sale-wide Keeneland September median of $80,000 comes from Thoroughbred Intelligence’s normalized results.
Race records reflect information available through October 26, 2026. The October 28 Championship Sale is excluded from completed-sale classifications.
Primary research sources: Keeneland, Fasig-Tipton, Ocala Breeders’ Sales, Tattersalls, Tattersalls Ireland, Goffs, Goffs UK, Arqana and Daily Racing Form. Additional reporting and verification: Thoroughbred Daily News, Racing Post, Equibase, Horse Racing Nation and the Breeders’ Cup.
