Hip 84: Our Racing Profile for the $2.8 Million Gun Runner Colt

The opening session of Keeneland September produced its top price on Monday afternoon, when the Gun Runner colt out of Twenty Carat brought $2.8 million.

We completed the analysis below as part of our pre-sale preparation for Hip 84.

Pedigree-based racing profiles are one of several forms of analysis we use in evaluating sale horses. We look at sire production, close-family performance, direct mating evidence and broader pedigree structure to build a view of likely surface, distance, precocity, developmental timing and class potential. Depending on the assignment, that work is combined with the judgment of bloodstock advisors and with physical, cardiovascular and veterinary evaluation.

This profile focuses on the pedigree and racing-aptitude side of that process.

This assessment is based on pedigree, close-family performance, sire production and direct mating evidence. Physical, cardiovascular and veterinary findings are outside the present analysis.

Executive racing read

Hip 84 profiles as a dirt-oriented colt with a strong speed-and-route balance, credible two-year-old capability and a particularly compelling three-year-old middle-distance profile.

The most important evidence is unusually close to the subject. His full sister French Blue, also by Gun Runner out of Twenty Carat, has won twice at three in 2026, earned $161,757 and placed third in the Santa Ysabel S. [G3]. Twenty Carat herself was a Grade 3 winner at seven furlongs, while the direct Gun Runner over Into Mischief cross has already produced Grade 2 winner Meaning and stakes winner Search Party.

The pedigree reads as speed being extended by Gun Runner's route capacity. Into Mischief supplies acceleration and early pace close to the dam, while Gun Runner, Bernardini and Smart Strike reinforce the ability to sustain that speed over two turns.

The strongest mature target range is one mile to 1 1/8 miles, with seven furlongs available on the speed side and 1 1/4 miles within the broader developmental range.

Racing type

Gun Runner provides one of the clearest high-class dirt templates in the contemporary population. He won at two, developed through the major three-year-old route series, then reached his highest level in the Breeders' Cup Classic [G1], Whitney S. [G1], Woodward S. [G1], Stephen Foster H. [G1], Clark H. [G1] and Pegasus World Cup [G1].

His progeny have reproduced that range. Sierra Leone, Taiba, Cyberknife, Locked and Early Voting demonstrate elite route ability, while Echo Zulu, Gunite and Vahva show that Gun Runner can also transmit high-class speed. The sire is therefore capable of producing horses whose principal asset is pace, stamina, or a combination of the two.

Twenty Carat adds a concentrated speed influence. She won two of four starts, earning a 95 Equibase Speed Figure in both her maiden victory and the Beaumont S. [G3] at seven furlongs.

The likely racing type is a high-cruising-speed dirt colt capable of carrying his pace beyond one turn.

Surface projection

Primary projection: dirt.

The close evidence is strongly concentrated on the main track. Gun Runner's elite production is centered on dirt, Twenty Carat's graded victory came on dirt, and French Blue has already added dirt allowance form and Grade 3 placing.

The direct Gun Runner over Into Mischief population has produced six dirt winners from nine dirt starters, including two stakes winners.

The deeper female family carries substantial turf quality through Shared Account, Sharing, Sparkle Blue and Colonial Flag, giving the pedigree genuine surface versatility. That breadth is valuable, though the most persuasive racing evidence for Hip 84 remains dirt first.

Distance projection

Working mature optimum: 1 mile to 1 1/8 miles. Broader effective range: 7 furlongs to 1 1/4 miles.

Gun Runner's progeny average 7.46 furlongs in winning distance, with an average maximum winning distance of 7.82 furlongs. His leading runners repeatedly extend well beyond those population averages, with major Grade 1 success at nine and ten furlongs.

The direct Gun Runner over Into Mischief cross currently averages 6.95 furlongs in winning distance. That population remains young and is heavily represented by fillies, so the individual race records are especially informative. Meaning has reached Grade 2 level, Search Party is a stakes winner, and French Blue has already achieved Grade 3 placing at three.

The maternal pedigree adds further route support. Secret Jewel is by Bernardini, while the third dam is by Smart Strike. The family includes horses capable of sustained performance at intermediate distances and beyond, including Stowaway, whose black-type record extends into longer dirt races.

The best working interpretation is eight to nine furlongs as the center, with ten furlongs available if the colt develops the required efficiency and finishing strength.

Development and precocity

The developmental profile is juvenile-capable with greater upside through three.

Gun Runner won twice at two and has produced 119 lifetime juvenile winners and 20 two-year-old black-type winners. Echo Zulu became champion at two, while Super Corredora and Brant provide additional evidence of high-level juvenile ability.

The female family also carries juvenile functionality. Stowaway won at two, Shared Account won at two, and Sharing developed into a Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf [G1] winner.

Twenty Carat's best racing came at three, and French Blue's current form has also developed at three. That combination suggests a colt with sufficient inherited pace to participate at two while retaining significant developmental room for the following season.

The preferred model is useful at two, more complete at three.

Two-year-old projection

A two-year-old campaign is supported by the pedigree, particularly from six to seven furlongs.

Gun Runner's juvenile record shows that his better runners can establish class early without sacrificing later development. Into Mischief adds further precocity through Twenty Carat's side of the pedigree.

The most attractive progression would be to establish form over six or seven furlongs, then allow a mile to come into play as the season advances and the colt's development warrants it.

The pedigree's principal value lies in carrying that juvenile speed forward rather than relying on early sprinting as the final expression.

Three-year-old projection

The three-year-old season is the most compelling part of the profile.

Gun Runner has repeatedly produced horses capable of major improvement into classic-season racing. Sierra Leone, Taiba, Cyberknife, Early Voting and Disarm all illustrate the sire's influence in important three-year-old dirt routes.

The direct cross adds current evidence through Meaning, Search Party and French Blue. French Blue is especially relevant because she is a full sibling to Hip 84 and has already shown graded-level ability at three.

For Hip 84, the logical progression is toward one-mile and two-turn dirt races, with 1 1/16 and 1 1/8 miles particularly well supported.

A classic-distance extension remains within the genetic range if his individual development aligns with Gun Runner's stronger route types.

Class projection

The pedigree supports graded-stakes upside with a legitimate Grade 1 ceiling on bloodlines.

Gun Runner has produced 62 black-type winners and 41 graded winners from 532 starters, with an AEI of 2.64 against a Comparable Index of 2.58.

Twenty Carat was a Grade 3 winner, and her first runner from this mating, French Blue, is already Grade 3-placed. That gives the mare direct evidence of transmitting graded-level ability through Gun Runner.

The deeper family adds substantial class. Secret Jewel is from Silk n' Sapphire, whose produce include Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf [G1] winner Shared Account, multiple graded winner Sparkle Blue and Grade 3 winner Colonial Flag. Shared Account subsequently produced Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf [G1] winner Sharing.

This is a pedigree with repeated high-level transmission rather than a single isolated source of class.

Pedigree support and family structure

The mating balances contemporary speed with established route influences.

Gun Runner contributes Candy Ride, Giant's Causeway and Quiet American. Twenty Carat contributes Into Mischief over Bernardini, with Smart Strike immediately behind.

Within five generations, the mating reinforces Storm Cat 4x5 and Quiet American 4x5, with additional Fappiano concentration. The ten-generation inbreeding coefficient is 2.71 percent, with a coefficient of relatedness of 3.98 percent and 907 unique ancestors among 2,046 pedigree positions.

The Storm Cat duplication arrives through Giant's Causeway on Gun Runner's side and Harlan's Holiday on Twenty Carat's side. Quiet American appears through Quiet Dance and Bernardini's dam Cara Rafaela. These are purposeful concentrations within an otherwise relatively open structure.

Mating evidence and its weight

The proprietary systems are directionally favorable, while evaluating the mating through different populations and methodologies.

TrueNicks assigns an A+ rating with a Variant of 5.94 to the direct Gun Runner over Into Mischief cross. The current sample contains nine starters, six winners and two stakes winners. Meaning is a Grade 2 winner, Search Party is a stakes winner and French Blue is Grade 3-placed.

The sample is currently weighted toward fillies, with eight female starters and one colt starter, so the direct male evidence remains developing.

Werk assigns A+++, its Triple Plus designation, based on the broader Gun Runner over Harlan pattern.

G1 Goldmine returns a 20/20 Match. Its dosage model gives DI 1.38 and CD 0.40, indicating a balanced middle-distance profile with a mild speed lean. That interpretation is consistent with the broader racing evidence pointing toward a mile to 1 1/8 miles as the most natural mature range.

We treat these systems as supporting inputs rather than the foundation of the profile. The observed racing evidence carries the greatest weight. The direct cross has already produced black-type quality, and this exact mating has produced French Blue. The proprietary models reinforce that foundation.

Final racing projection

Hip 84 profiles as a high-class dirt prospect whose most likely mature identity is that of a miler to intermediate-route colt with enough inherited speed to be effective early and enough Gun Runner depth to continue stretching with maturity.

The preferred mature range is one mile to 1 1/8 miles, with seven furlongs available on the speed side and 1 1/4 miles as an upper-end developmental possibility.

The profile supports participation at two, while the most important racing window should emerge at three. The exact mating already has graded-level validation through French Blue, and the broader Gun Runner over Into Mischief cross is producing black-type horses at an encouraging rate.

The principal strengths are dirt orientation, speed carried through distance, direct mating validation, and a deep female family with repeated Grade 1 production.

On pedigree evidence, Hip 84 belongs in the graded-stakes projection category, with the genetic range to develop into a serious two-turn three-year-old.
