Before They Were Breeders’ Cup Horses Saturday
We traced the public auction history of every horse drawn for Saturday’s nine Breeders’ Cup races: what each one sold for, who bought it, which were bought back, withdrawn or never sold, and which are going back to auction in the coming weeks.
Earlier this week we traced the auction histories of Friday’s juveniles. Most of those histories were short, because a two-year-old has usually been through the ring only once or twice, as a yearling and perhaps again at a breeze-up sale.
Saturday’s horses have had more time to accumulate a record, and it shows. Some have been cataloged four or five times. Several were sold again after their racing careers had already made them valuable, and a good number are cataloged to sell again within days of running.
Consider Shisospicy, who runs in Saturday’s Turf Sprint. Bred in Kentucky by Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt, she sold for $100,000 at Keeneland January in 2023 and for $200,000 to Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds at Fasig-Tipton July six months later. The following spring she breezed an eighth in :9 3/5 at OBS April and was bought back for $300,000.
Last November 1 at Del Mar, she led at every call to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Two days later she sold for $5.2 million at Fasig-Tipton’s November Sale to Morplay Racing. On Saturday she defends her title at Keeneland, and on Monday she is cataloged again at the same Fasig-Tipton sale, as hip 149.
Her journey covers a yearling sale, a second yearling sale, a two-year-old sale where she did not sell, a championship win and a seven-figure sale as a racing or broodmare prospect. That made me curious how many of Saturday’s other runners have histories like hers.

We traced all 110 horses drawn for Saturday’s nine Breeders’ Cup races through every public auction record we could identify, from weanling sales to online auctions. The search took us through sale records in Lexington, Saratoga, Ocala, Newmarket, Doncaster, Kildare, Deauville and the Japan Racing Horse Association’s Select Sale in Hokkaido.
Seventy of the 110 have sold at public auction at least once, and 26 of those sold at two or more auctions. Eight others were cataloged or offered but never completed a sale. The remaining 32 have no identifiable public auction history before this week, and they include the two most recent Kentucky Derby winners. Twenty-nine of the 110, including 24 of the 47 fillies and mares, are cataloged for an auction between Wednesday and the Tattersalls December Sale.

Half the Classic Field Never Went Through a Sale Ring
The Classic is the clearest case. Four of its eight starters have no public auction record.
Sovereignty, bred and raced by Godolphin, won the Kentucky Derby, Belmont and Travers last year and the Whitney in August. Golden Tempo won this year’s Kentucky Derby and Belmont for Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stables, who bred him in partnership. Knightsbridge, another Godolphin homebred, won the Pacific Classic in August. T O Password, a Japanese-bred, has no identified auction record either.
The other four reached the race through the sale ring, and their prices were spread widely. Forever Young, the defending Classic champion, sold for ¥98 million (about $717,000) as a yearling at the 2022 Select Sale in Japan and races for Susumu Fujita.
Magnitude was sold twice in ten months. He brought $310,000 from FMQ Stables as a weanling at Keeneland November in 2022, then $450,000 from Winchell Thoroughbreds in Book 2 at Keeneland September the following year. This year he won the Dubai World Cup, with Forever Young second, and the Stephen Foster, with Sovereignty third.
Napoleon Solo cost $40,000 in Book 2 at Keeneland September in 2024, bought by Chad Summers, who now trains him. He won the Champagne last fall and the Preakness in May. The Puma was bought back for $95,000 at the same sale, in Book 3, and then sold for $150,000 at OBS April to Marquee Bloodstock. He won the Pennsylvania Derby in September, beating Further Ado, the morning-line favorite for the Dirt Mile.
Three of the eight met in the Travers at Saratoga on August 29. Leading Change won it, with Napoleon Solo second, Golden Tempo third as the favorite and The Puma fourth. The $40,000 yearling finished ahead of the homebred Derby winner, and the $150,000 two-year-old one place behind him. A year earlier, Sovereignty won the same race from Bracket Buster, who runs in the Dirt Mile, and Magnitude.
For the Fillies and Mares, the Next Sale Is Already on the Calendar
Twenty-three of Saturday’s 47 fillies and mares are cataloged at Fasig-Tipton November on Monday, Keeneland November’s Book 1 on Tuesday or the Tattersalls December Sale in Newmarket. In the three races restricted to fillies and mares, the Filly & Mare Sprint, Filly & Mare Turf and Distaff, 18 of the 36 starters are entered to sell.

For many of them, the most recent auction price was set in the breeding-stock market. Last November and December, eight of Saturday’s fillies and mares were offered as racing or broodmare prospects or horses in training, seven of them in a sales ring and one online, after their race records had already done much of the work.
Kilwin is a good example. BBN Racing bought her for $225,000 in Book 2 at Keeneland September in 2023. A year later she was offered at the first Keeneland Championship Sale, at Del Mar, and bought back for $575,000. Last November, after she had won the Test at Saratoga, Rick Howard bought her for $3 million at Keeneland November, and she now races for BBN Racing and Howard together. She is cataloged again at Keeneland November next week.
Lush Lips sold for £82,000 (about $104,000) as a yearling at the Goffs UK Premier Sale in 2023 to Avenue Bloodstock, Medallion Racing and Donnacha O’Brien, and she made her first starts in Ireland. She won the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland last October, and a month later Dixiana Farm paid $3.7 million for her at Keeneland November. Bless the Broken, who never went through a sale ring as a younger horse, brought $950,000 at Fasig-Tipton November from Fergus Galvin, agent, and is cataloged there again on Monday. Foie Gras sold for $100,000 at a Fasig-Tipton online sale in December and is cataloged at Keeneland November.
Two others went through the ring last year and were bought back at high prices. Scottish Lassie, who cost $50,000 as a yearling, was bought back for $3.8 million at Fasig-Tipton November. Tiffany was bought back by her vendor at 1,000,000 guineas (about $1,406,000) at Tattersalls December. Both are cataloged again this year.
Survie, Group 1-placed in France at the time, sold for 1,900,000 guineas (about $2,671,000) at that same Tattersalls sale to M.V. Magnier. She has since won two stakes at Saratoga, one of them a Grade 1, and runs Saturday in the Turf for George Boughey.
Super Corredora, last year’s Juvenile Fillies winner, is one of the youngest horses heading to the November sales. She cost $400,000 in Book 2 at Keeneland September and is cataloged in Book 1 at Keeneland November, consigned by Lane’s End.
The timing explains part of this. A filly with a strong race record and a good pedigree has a second market waiting for her, and the November sales begin two days after the Breeders’ Cup, so Saturday’s result reaches the buyers before the bidding starts.
A Third of the Field Was Cataloged at Keeneland September
Thirty-six of Saturday’s 110 were cataloged as yearlings at Keeneland September between 2020 and 2024, and 30 of them sold there, at a median of $150,000. The 2023 sale, which produced this year’s four-year-olds, supplied the most. Eighteen of Saturday’s starters were cataloged there, and the 16 that sold brought a median of $117,500, compared with $67,000 for every horse sold at that sale.
The most expensive of the 36 was Deterministic, who brought $625,000 from St. Elias Stables in Book 2 in 2022. American Stage brought $500,000 in Book 1 in 2023 from Yoshizawa Stable and now runs in the Sprint for the Japanese trainer Yoshito Yahagi. Further Ado cost $275,000 in Book 1 in 2024 and then brought $550,000 at OBS April from Spendthrift Farm.
The later books produced their share. Classic Q cost $40,000 in Book 5 in 2023, ten months after she was withdrawn from Keeneland November as a weanling, and has won the Just a Game and First Lady this year. Dark Saffron cost $25,000 in Book 6, brought $120,000 at OBS April the following spring and races in the Sprint for Sultan Ali and trainer Ahmad bin Harmash. Built went from $82,000 in Book 5 to $260,000 at OBS April and won the Vanderbilt in July.
Six of the 36 left Keeneland September without selling. Thought Process was bought back for $120,000 in Book 2 in 2023 and again for $57,000 at Fasig-Tipton October a few weeks later. She won the Gamely this year and is cataloged at Keeneland November. Hymn, bought back for $140,000 at the same September sale, runs in the Sprint for a partnership led by Fleur de Lis Stables, who bred him.
The comparison with the sale median comes with the same qualification as in the juveniles piece. These are horses that have already earned places in championship races, and many expensive Keeneland yearlings never do anything comparable.
The Cheapest Horses Took the Longest Routes
Chunk of Gold was the cheapest completed sale we found among Saturday’s 110. Brereton Jones’s Airdrie Stud offered him at Fasig-Tipton October in 2023, and Chris Melton bought him for $2,500. He has since been second in the Risen Star, Louisiana Derby and Lukas Classic, third in the Clark, and has earned $1,051,511. He runs in the Dirt Mile.
Regaled sold for $9,500 as a weanling at Keeneland November in 2021 to Timbercreek Farm, and she was claimed for $30,000 from Timbercreek Racing in a maiden race at Laurel in March 2024. Paramount Sales offered her at the Inglis Digital USA May Sale in 2025, where Legion Bloodstock paid $300,000 for her. She finished third in last year’s Distaff and runs in it again on Saturday.
Listenupshance cost $10,000 at Fasig-Tipton October in 2023 and was withdrawn from two OBS two-year-old sales the following year. He won the Bing Crosby at Del Mar in July, and a 25% interest in him is cataloged at Wednesday’s Championship Sale. Joe Shiesty brought $16,000 as a yearling at Keeneland January in 2022, was withdrawn from Keeneland September that fall and has earned $1,376,227.
Explora followed a route that should look familiar from Friday. She cost $22,000 in Book 3 at Keeneland September in 2024 and sold for $350,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May sale the following spring, under the name Blame Kate, to a buyer recorded as Three Amigos. She races for Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, the same partnership that bought Miss Monica at OBS April this year, and she won the Test at Saratoga in August.
Nakatomi took longer. He sold for $18,000 as a weanling and $25,000 as a yearling, then brought $205,000 at Fasig-Tipton’s July horses-of-racing-age sale in 2023 from Qatar Racing and Fitriani Hay. He won the Vanderbilt in 2024 and runs in the Sprint at seven.
Thirteen of Fourteen Yearling-to-Juvenile Resales Rose
Fourteen of Saturday’s starters sold as yearlings and again as two-year-olds, and thirteen of them brought more the second time. The median multiple was 3.0 times the yearling price, gross of costs.
Stradale produced the largest gain in dollars. He brought $285,000 at Fasig-Tipton July as a yearling and $1.3 million at OBS April after breezing an eighth in :9 4/5, and he races for Kaleem Shah. Explora produced the largest multiple, at almost 16 times. Fully Subscribed went from $35,000 in Book 4 at Keeneland September to $300,000 at OBS April from Klaravich Stables. She has won the Spinster and Personal Ensign this year.
Miss Yechance took the longest European route. She sold for £32,000 (about $41,000) as a yearling at the Goffs UK Premier Sale and was bought back for £48,000 (about $63,000) at the Goffs UK Breeze-Up in April 2025. She won her first start, and in June Royal Chance Bloodstock bought her for 250,000 guineas (about $356,000) at a Tattersalls online sale. She won the Prix de l’Abbaye at ParisLongchamp on October 4, and she is cataloged as a whole horse at Wednesday’s Championship Sale.
The one resale that went the wrong way was Possiblemente, who sold for $20,000 as a yearling and was recorded at $17,000 as a private sale at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic two-year-old sale. He sold again for $65,000 at a Fasig-Tipton online sale in February 2025, has since been claimed twice and, at six, runs in the Turf Sprint.
The resales from foal or weanling to yearling came out closer to even. Seven of Saturday’s starters sold at both stages, and three of them brought less as yearlings: Bracket Buster, Owen Almighty and Facteur Cheval. Hubert Honoré bought Facteur Cheval for 145,000 guineas (about $200,000) as a foal at Tattersalls December in 2019 and consigned him to Arqana’s Vente de Sélection in Deauville the following September, where ASAP Bloodstock bought him for €120,000 (about $141,000).
As with Friday’s juveniles, these figures describe only horses that reached a Breeders’ Cup field. They say nothing about the many pinhooks that lost money and never made it this far.
The Turf Races Mix Seven-Figure Yearlings With Homebreds
The most expensive yearling among Saturday’s starters was El Cordobes, who sold for 2,000,000 guineas (about $2,380,000) in Book 1 at Tattersalls October in 2022. Diamond Necklace brought €1.7 million (about $1,873,000) from M.V. Magnier at Arqana August in 2024 and races for the Coolmore partners and Aidan O’Brien.
Arqana August supplied three more. Blue Bolt sold for €400,000 (about $436,000) to Sackville Donald for Juddmonte in 2023, Evershed for €340,000 (about $371,000) the same year, and Expensive Queen for €260,000 (about $263,000) in 2022. Johanna Walsh brought €460,000 (about $511,000) at Goffs Orby in 2024 and is cataloged at Tattersalls December. Bay City Roller sold for €320,000 (about $342,000) at Goffs Orby in 2023.
Ethical Diamond took the most unusual route. He sold as a horse in training at the Tattersalls July Sale in 2023 for 320,000 guineas (about $433,000), bought by Harold Kirk for Willie Mullins. Last year he won the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Del Mar.
The Mile and the Turf each have six starters with no public auction record, more than any other race on the card. Aidan O’Brien’s other four Saturday runners for the Coolmore partners have none: Precise in the Filly & Mare Turf, True Love and Puerto Rico in the Mile, and Benvenuto Cellini in the Turf. Notable Speech, last year’s Mile winner, races for Godolphin, which bred him. Juddmonte bred Red Letter and Qirat, and Qirat’s only auction appearance was a withdrawal from Tattersalls’ Autumn Horses in Training Sale in 2024.

The American turf horses in those races follow the same pattern. Test Score, Burnham Square, Minaret Station and Brilliant Berti have no auction records and race for the people who bred them, and Far Bridge, bred by Calumet Farm, has no public sale record either.
Eight of Saturday’s starters are trained in Japan. Six of them were bred there, and two of those six have auction histories, both from the Select Sale. Forever Young sold as a yearling in 2022, and Ask Ikigomi sold as a foal in 2023 for ¥86 million (about $610,000). Lord Fons and Deep Monster race for ownership clubs, and Lugal and T O Password have no public auction record. The other two are Kentucky-breds. American Stage came from Keeneland September, while T O Elvis, winner of the Churchill Downs Stakes in May, has no public auction record.
Some of Them Sell Before They Run
The Keeneland Championship Sale on Wednesday evening at Castleton includes six of Saturday’s starters. Miss Yechance is offered as a whole horse. The other five are fractional interests: 25% of Listenupshance, 25% of Iron Man Cal, 25% of Liam Smith, 40% of Little Thunder and 2.5% of Englishman, the 4-5 morning-line favorite for the Sprint.
Englishman has already sold twice. He brought $240,000 as a weanling at Keeneland November in 2023 and $400,000 in Book 2 at Keeneland September the following year. Liam Smith has no auction record, but he has been claimed twice, each time for $50,000. Little Thunder was bought back for $12,000 as a yearling at OBS October in 2023.
Last year’s Championship Sale offered a preview of how this works. A 25% interest in Bracket Buster sold for $425,000 there, and he runs Saturday in the Dirt Mile. His earlier history runs in the other direction: he brought $160,000 as a weanling at Keeneland November in 2022 and $125,000 as a yearling the following September.
As with the juveniles, a fractional interest is a different transaction from buying a whole horse, so these prices cannot be compared directly with the earlier ones. They do show the market putting a value on horses at the moment when the most information is available about them.
What These Price Histories Tell Us
I expected years of racing to make the auction record less useful for older horses, since the racetrack has long since replaced the sale ring as the main source of information about them. For many of Saturday’s runners, the record turned out to be longer and more recent than I expected.
For Saturday’s colts and geldings, the story looks a lot like Friday’s. Some came through Keeneland September, some through the two-year-old sales, some at prices as low as $2,500. The Classic adds a reminder that the best dirt horses in America can come from breeders who kept them to race.
For the fillies and mares, the auction history keeps going. The yearling price records what someone thought of a pedigree and a physical. The November price, for Kilwin, Lush Lips or Shisospicy, records what a race record and a pedigree page with a stakes win on it were worth to the breeding market. Many of those mares will be offered again next week, a few days after running in a championship race.
We’ve followed these histories as far as the public records allow. The decisions behind the transactions, including why someone bought, kept, resold or brought a horse home, often remain with the people who made them. If you bred, bought, sold or pinhooked one of these 110 horses and have another part of the story to share, I’d like to hear it through our contact form or at @TB_Intel on X.

Methodology. The study covers the 110 horses drawn on October 26, 2026 for the nine Breeders’ Cup championship races at Keeneland on October 31, excluding also-eligibles. The population reflects the draw and may change through scratches or substitutions.
Auction histories were reconstructed using published results from Keeneland, Fasig-Tipton (including Fasig-Tipton Digital), OBS, Tattersalls, Tattersalls Ireland, Goffs, Goffs UK and Arqana, with additional information from Thoroughbred Intelligence’s sale files. Horses were matched on sire, dam and foaling information, and consignor names are reproduced as each sale company records them. Keeneland’s results files for 2019 through 2024 do not separately identify post-sales and ring sales. Japanese prices come from netkeiba’s records of the Japan Racing Horse Association’s Select Sale and are shown as hammer prices, excluding Japan’s 10% consumption tax. The Texas Thoroughbred Association yearling sale (Coal Battle) and the Inglis Digital USA May Sale (Regaled) are reported from BloodHorse.
Completed ring transactions, recorded post-sales and private sales recorded by the sale company count as sales. RNAs and withdrawals are identified separately. Claims are not counted as auction sales. For the 32 horses with no record, we searched the same sale companies’ results, and netkeiba for the Japanese-bred horses. Sale records from Argentina, Chile and South Africa were not searched directly. An absence of an identifiable public auction record does not prove a horse was never offered, and private transactions may be missing.
Sale prices remain in their original currencies, with guineas left in guineas. Dollar figures in parentheses are estimates, converted at the month’s average of the Federal Reserve’s daily exchange rates and rounded to the nearest $1,000, with a guinea counted as £1.05. Gross resale multiples exclude carrying costs, preparation, commissions and financing. Keeneland September book assignments for 2022 through 2024 follow the published session pairs, Books 1 through 6. The 2023 Keeneland September median of $67,000 comes from Thoroughbred Intelligence’s calculation from Keeneland’s results file, on the same basis as the starters’ figures.
Upcoming sales are listed from the Keeneland Championship and November catalogs and the Fasig-Tipton November catalog as of October 27, and the Tattersalls December catalog. Race records reflect information available through October 26, 2026.
Primary research sources: Keeneland, Fasig-Tipton, Ocala Breeders’ Sales, Tattersalls, Tattersalls Ireland, Goffs, Goffs UK, Arqana, netkeiba and Daily Racing Form. Additional reporting and verification: BloodHorse, Thoroughbred Daily News, Racing Post, Equibase, Horse Racing Nation and the Breeders’ Cup.
Corrections. This piece draws on public sale records from North America, Europe and Japan, race records and reporting from several outlets, and we checked every figure we could against its original source. With 110 horses and 171 sale entries, an error is still possible. If you find one, let me know through our contact form or @TB_Intel on X, and I’ll correct it quickly.
